Finding an LGBTQ+-Affirming Doctor: A No-BS Guide

Finding a doctor who understands LGBTQ+ health is not just about comfort. It is about getting actual, complete care. A provider who makes assumptions about your body, your relationships, or your identity can miss things. A good affirming provider asks the right questions and knows the right answers.

Here is how to find one.

The Best Directories to Start With

You do not have to cold-call clinics and hope for the best. Several vetted directories exist specifically to connect LGBTQ+ people with affirming providers.

  • GLMA Provider Directory (GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality) lists doctors, nurse practitioners, therapists, and other providers who have committed to LGBTQ+ inclusive care.
  • OutCare OutList is a free directory of LGBTQ+-affirming healthcare providers across the US. It includes primary care, mental health, OB-GYN, and more.
  • LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory is another searchable resource organized by specialty and location.

Questions Worth Asking Before Your First Appointment

A quick phone screen can save you a stressful visit. Ask:

  • Does this practice have experience with LGBTQ+ patients?
  • Do intake forms include options beyond male and female, and can I specify my pronouns?
  • Does the practice have experience with gender-affirming care, or with patients on hormone therapy? (If relevant to you.)
  • How does the practice handle confidentiality for LGBTQ+ patients who may not be out to family members on their insurance plan?

You are interviewing them as much as they are evaluating you.

Red Flags to Watch For

A good provider should make you feel seen, not studied. Watch for:

  • Misgendering you after you have corrected them, without acknowledgment or apology.
  • Asking invasive questions about your identity that are not relevant to the care you came in for.
  • Making assumptions about your sexual behavior based on your gender or orientation.
  • Anything that sounds like discouraging you from your identity or expressing discomfort with it. That is a dealbreaker.
  • Not updating your preferred name or pronouns in your chart after being told.

What If You Are in an Area With No Affirming Providers?

Telehealth has changed this significantly. Many LGBTQ+-affirming practices now offer virtual appointments across multiple states. Platforms like FOLX Health and Plume specialize in LGBTQ+ care, including hormone therapy, delivered virtually.

You may also find affirming care at:

  • Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which serve all patients regardless of ability to pay.
  • Planned Parenthood locations, many of which offer LGBTQ+-affirming primary and sexual health care.
  • University medical centers, which often have LGBTQ+ health programs.

A Note on Insurance and Cost

Not every affirming provider accepts every insurance plan. It is worth confirming coverage before an appointment. If you are uninsured or underinsured, the community health center and telehealth options above often offer sliding-scale fees. OutCare’s directory lets you filter by insurance type.

You deserve care that treats you as a whole person. A provider who sees you clearly is not a luxury. It is the standard of care you deserve.
