If you are in crisis right now, please reach out. You do not have to explain yourself perfectly. You do not have to be at the absolute worst point to call. These services exist for exactly this moment.

LGBTQ+ Specific Lines

  • The Trevor Project
    Phone: 1-866-488-7386 (24/7)
Text: Text START to 678-678 (24/7)
    Chat: thetrevorproject.org/get-help
For LGBTQ+ young people under 25. Crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and a judgment-free space to talk. Confidential and completely free. Trained counselors who specifically understand LGBTQ+ experiences are available every hour of every day.
  • Trans Lifeline
    Phone: 1-877-565-8860 (US)
    translifeline.org
Run by and for trans people. Peer support from trans operators who understand what you are facing from the inside. This line prioritizes callers who are trans, and it operates without the default practice of involving police. That matters to a lot of trans people, and it is intentional.
  • LGBT National Hotline
    Phone: 1-888-843-4564
    lgbthotline.org
For people of all ages. Hours: Monday through Friday, 2 PM to 11 PM Eastern; Saturday, noon to 5 PM Eastern. Peer support volunteers across a full range of concerns, not just crisis. A good line to call when you need to talk through something with someone who gets it.
  • LGBT National Youth Talkline
    Phone: 1-800-246-7743
For youth through age 25. Same peer support model as the national hotline, specifically staffed for younger callers.

General Crisis Lines Available to Everyone

  • 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
    Call or text: 988 (24/7)
For anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Trained counselors are available 24/7. The Trevor Project operates through this line for LGBTQ+ youth. If you call 988 and want LGBTQ+-specific support, you can ask to be connected with a Trevor Project counselor.
  • Crisis Text Line
    Text HOME to 741741 (24/7)
For people who prefer to text rather than call. Free, confidential, and available around the clock. Connect with a trained crisis counselor via text message. This option works well if talking on the phone feels hard.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • You do not need to be actively suicidal to reach out. These lines are for distress, loneliness, fear, confusion, and anyone who just needs someone present with them.
  • Trans Lifeline does not involve police by default, which matters to many trans callers. Other lines have specific safety protocols that vary by situation.
  • All of these services are free and confidential.
  • If you are outside the US, look into your country’s LGBTQ+ crisis resources. IASP maintains a list of international crisis helplines on their website.

You matter. Whatever you are carrying right now, you do not have to carry it alone tonight. There are real people on the other end of these lines, and they want to hear from you.
